Winnetka, Kenilworth and Glencoe

Towering trees, luscious greenery and manicured lawns compliment the vast selection of homes and properties when considering a move to one of these suburbs just north of Chicago. Graced by a beautiful natural setting, a collection of architectural landmarks, a strong sense of community traditions, an inviting central business district and a commitment to excellence in education, Winnetka, Kenilworth and Glencoe combine to offer many opportunities for recreational, cultural and civic participation for their respective residents. Hugging the Lake Michigan shoreline, these three villages are located in the center of one of the nation’s most wealthy retail markets. By offering quality, value and personal service, the villages’ business districts draw a sophisticated clientele, not only from locals and their immediate neighbors, but also from other wealthy, upscale markets throughout the Greater Chicago Area.

The name Winnetka, derived from an Indian word meaning “Beautiful Land,” captures the essence of this charming village that for more than one hundred years has been regarded as one of the most prestigious business and residential locations on Chicago’s famed North Shore. Winnetka has a reputation as a solid, stable community reflecting a comfortable blend of both present and past. Long-established business districts with charming tree-lined streets, decorative brickwork, old-world architecture, convenient parking and careful landscaping make this village a delightful place to stroll, browse and buy.

The Village of Glencoe is slightly older with its origins dating back to 1839 when Anson and Lisa Taylor paid $189.94 for 160 acres of former Indian land. The land once belonged to the Potawatomis Indians who cared for and preserved the natural beauty of the region. They carefully lived amongst the beauty, careful not to disturb the thick forest, filled with wild game. Once early settlers forced the Indians to migrate toward what is now the state of Iowa, the forest began to fall and an aspiring logging trade was born. The forest, once too dense for wagons to pass through, was disappearing fast under the axe of progress. The birth of the railroad, however, is what finally brought residents to the Village of Glencoe and its surrounding communities because it provided people working in Chicago a choice not to live so close to their businesses.

A number of Mid-Western towns can boast homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Glencoe, though, has an entire subdivision of Wright homes making it the third largest collection of Wright houses in the world. The Ravine Bluffs subdivision is located in northeast Glencoe and sits between two ravines. Other popular styles that became fashionable in the early 1900s was the Tudor Revival style and Georgian architecture. These types of homes can be found in not only Glencoe, but in Winnetka and Kenilworth as well.

Kenilworth is the smallest of the three Villages with less than 3,000 inhabitants. Glencoe is second largest with just over 8,000 residents while Winnetka is by far the most populated with a little more than 12,000 residents. Despite being the smallest village, and predominately residential at that, Kenilworth is the closest of all to downtown Chicago. So, if locals strive to catch a baseball game at Wrigley Field or desire a juicy porterhouse at one of Chicago’s many renowned steakhouses, the task is a simple one and can be accomplished in less than twenty minutes by car.

Kenilworth is also within shouting distance of Northwestern University and the University of Loyola, in Chicago. These academic institutions offer tremendous educational opportunities and experiences for people of all ages to enjoy, whether attending a play or musical or visiting one of their many museums or campus events.

The location of all three villages in relation to a thriving Chicago metropolis, Lake Michigan, and the state of Wisconsin some 30 miles to the north, makes living in any one of their subdivisions a unique opportunity. All three villages are family oriented communities with programs and facilities to serve residents of all ages. From senior citizen outreach programs to childcare and development centers to continuing education schools for adults, the needs of local residents are being met and these communities are stronger as a result. The perseverance of local leaders and volunteer groups who work diligently to continually improve the public services these communities extend to residents, to expand the recreational activities the local park districts offer and strengthen the influence of each Village’s Chamber of Commerce for the development of current and future local businesses is apparent.

The hard work and dedication of their residents makes living in each of these villages a welcoming and comforting experience. So, if words like community, pride, history and culture inspire or motivate you, then the villages of Winnetka, Kenilworth and Glencoe will make exceptional places for you and yours to call home.
